The 2017 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released on 15 August 2017 by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy. Since 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world Top 500 universities annually based on transparent methodology and third-party data. This year, in addition to the top 500 universities, ShanghaiRanking announces the list of universities ranked between 501 and 800 as ARWU World Top 500 Candidates.

Harvard University remains the number one in the world for the 15th year. Stanford continues to be the second top university. The University of Cambridge overtakes MIT and Berkeley and raises to the third best university in the world. Washington University in St. Louis enters the top 20 for the first time. ETH Zurich (19th) in Switzerland continues to be the top ranked university in Continental Europe this year, followed by University of Copenhagen (30th) in Denmark and Pierre and Marie Curie University (40th) in France. Tokyo university is ranked 24th and is still the highest ranked university in Asia. Tsinghua University (48th) enters the top 50 for the first time and becomes the third top ranked Asian universities behind Kyoto University (35th). University of Melbourne (39th) tops other universities in Oceania.
